Highlights

Contract No. CV/2020/01 at Pok Fu Lam South encompasses site formation works for land platforms covering approximately 7 hectares. The project includes the construction of two footbridges with associated lifts across Shek Pai Wan Road, an access road, road widening, junction improvements, and ancillary works such as drainage, sewerage, waterworks, and landscaping. These efforts aim to support the forthcoming redevelopment of Wa Fu Estate. During the site visit, participants will gain insights into large-scale hillside site formation and civil works. This includes the installation of retaining walls, the construction of footbridges, roadworks, and various ancillary activities like landscaping. Participants will also explore the challenges and solutions encountered in construction within difficult terrains and geological conditions, as well as the complex interface issues related to nearby infrastructure, including a declared monument and a reservoir.

Safety Requirements

Participants should prepare their own safety gears (including safety shoe, reflective jacket and safety helmet) and hold a valid safety Green Card.

Registration

The number of participants is strictly limited.  Priority will be given to members of the AGS(HK). The number of attendees will be limited to 25 and the applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  Successful applicants will be informed about 1 week before the event.  CPD certificates will be provided. If you have any queries, please call Martin Yip at 6012 0019.

Book Prize

Professionals under 35 years of age are encouraged to submit a Book Prize Report (max. 500 words) on webinars and site visits arranged by AGS (HK).

Contributors to successful Book Prize Reports will be awarded a Book Prize that comprises of a book "Geology of Site Investigation Boreholes in Hong Kong" written by Chris Fletcher, and a coupon of HK$500 for Eslite Spectrum (誠品生活). The successful Book Prize Report will also be published on the AGS (HK) website to showcase your accomplishment.

Prior to report submission, please refer to the “The AGS Book Prize Reports – Assessment Framework”* on the AGS (HK) website. Recap of the Day

On December 28, 2024, members of the AGS community had the opportunity to visit the dynamic construction site at Pok Fu Lam South, where Contract No. CV/2020/01 is underway. We extend our sincere gratitude to the OAP and its partners for organizing this site visit, which was attended by 23 participants. This ambitious project is a key component of the Wa Fu Estate redevelopment, encompassing 7 hectares of land formation and involving the construction of two footbridges with lifts across Shek Pai Wan Road.

During the visit, participants gained valuable insights into the complexities of hillside site formation, such as the installation of retaining and borepile walls and the challenges posed by difficult terrains and geological conditions. Design considerations were also explored, including the use of soil nail slopes as an alternative to bored pile walls and solutions for dealing with kaolin and soil cavities. Innovative construction methods, such as rock splitting hammers and chemical splitting agents, were discussed as ways to expedite rock excavation. Additionally, the use of small timber platforms for the mini-pile foundations of temporary steel platforms for bored pile wall construction was highlighted.

The tour also shed light on the intricate interface challenges with nearby infrastructure, providing a fascinating glimpse into modern engineering solutions and the strategic planning necessary to address both structural and phasing considerations in large-scale urban projects.
