About the event
Synopsis
This webinar showcases the transition from traditional surface quarrying to strategic underground quarrying development in Hong Kong, a critical evolution addressing material supply security and land scarcity. With mountainous terrain comprised of strong granite and volcanic rock, Hong Kong leverages its geology to unlock subterranean potential under the Civil Engineering and Development Department’s Cavern Master Plan.
The Quarrying-cum-Cavern development model delivers a triple win by releasing high value surface land, hiding suitable land consuming facilities underground, and yielding high quality aggregates to support the local construction industry. A key case study highlights this shift: the Underground Quarrying at Lam Tei development, a self-financed project transitioning an existing surface quarry into an underground complex. By integrating quarrying, rock product production, and cavern space creation, it supports Northern Metropolis growth while minimising operational nuisances for nearby communities. Ultimately, this sustainable approach generates a strategic underground land bank for future generations.
