Abstract
Digital technologies offer exciting opportunities for enhancing the capability and efficiency of geotechnical work, and for revolutionizing geotechnical practice. Geotechnical professionals, particularly geologists, spend considerable time and effort in logging of rock cores and producing ground investigation records, which provide vital information for engineering geological and geotechnical engineering practices. Reaping the benefits of the advances of computer vision-based AI technology and the widespread use of smart mobile devices, the ultimate goal of an on-going project is to develop a mobile APP to facilitate logging of rock cores. Based on the users’ uploaded core box photographs, the mobile APP is able to classify fresh and weathered igneous rocks; and automatically identify fractures in rock cores to allow the subsequent calculation of…
