About the event

Highlights :

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is ranked 15th worldwide and 1st in Hong Kong in the discipline of Civil and Structural Engineering (including Geotechnical Engineering) in the QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2022. Recently, Smart Geotechnology Laboratory has been established in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of PolyU to facilitate the development and application of advanced optical fibre sensing techniques in geotechnical engineering in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.

The technical visit will cover (1) a brief introduction to commonly used optical fibre sensing techniques, including fibre Bragg grating (FBG), Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA), optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), etc., and their sensing principles; (2) novel transducers developed by PolyU research team; (3) recent successful applications of optical fibre sensing techniques in Hong Kong, including a monitoring project of trees and stone walls under extreme weather conditions, monitoring of the deformation of diaphragm walls during execution, pile foundation monitoring; and (4) experiments and demonstrations using state-of-the-art distributed optical fibre sensing techniques.

Safety Requirements :

Participants shall follow the safety instructions given and are required to complete the liability disclaimer form before the visit.
